先说历史，书中主要写了俄国在十九世纪初的那一段历史，与拿破仑的两次战争是主要内容。作者在书中论述了自己的观点，对历史是由伟人创造这种历史观进行了批判，作者认为，伟人只是历史的奴隶罢了，真正的历史，是由参与其中的每一个人创造的。如果把每一个人的意志和行为比作微分，那么历史就是对所有这些微分做积分，反映了人们的集体意志和行为。其实从古至今，人类从来都没有真正掌握过历史发展的规律，不然人类历史上也就不会有那么多战争和灾难了。
